My name is Terry Hamilton. I’m a teacher. I’m a resident of California. I've been in a loving relationship with my partner, John Ruble, for 40 years this September 10. And I’m a proud supporter of Liberty Education Forum.
The state I live in has been central in some of the most monumental challenges in the fight for gay equality in history: from the failed Briggs Initiative of 1978 -- which would have made it illegal for me to be a school teacher as an openly gay man -- to the Proposition 8 vote in 2008 which tore the right of marriage from gay Californians who wanted nothing more than the same rights as other committed couples.
But these battles have led to unlikely alliances: from Ronald Reagan’s historic public opposition to the Briggs Initiative to the partnership of Republican Ted Olson and Democrat David Boies in combating Prop 8 in the courts, the California experience shows me that if equal rights are going to become a reality, we’re going to need to reach out to everyone.
Liberty Education Forum has been doing that since its founding in 1994, leaving no stone unturned in its efforts to educate everyone about the importance of gay acceptance. LEF has made unlikely alliances—from Randy Roberts Potts and Mary Lou Wallner to the Reitan family in Minnesota. And I’m proud to call myself an ally of Liberty Education Forum, too.
I invite you to become an ally of Liberty Education Forum as well.
Sincerely,
Terry Hamilton
